Reimagine Physics Education

Let's start at zero. If could invent how physics is taught completely from scratch, would it look anything like the current curriculum?

Standard teaching leaves most students unable to use, let alone understand basic ideas of physics. Many, however, develop great skill at examination problems. So let’s try a different way of teaching. Pick a few topics (Morrison 1964). I’d be happy if, after one year of studying physics, students understood just Newton’s first and second laws.4 Then choose historical examples and debates involving these ideas, and spend the whole year on them, introducing methods of estimation and other physics ways of thinking. Michael Matthews’ Time for Science Education (2000) is a rich source for such material. This course would be as much fun to develop as to teach.Sanjay Mahajan

When science was introduced into the schools, it was naturally taught … dogmatically and deductively. But it is now time for us to realize that science is our process of interpreting natural phenomena… . Hence if young people are to become adepts in science, they must be taught how to interpret for themselves. They should develop the habit of making sound interpretations of phenomena—a habit which can be acquired only by scientific study.1

I prefer to spend my college years searching, exploring, and wondering, as opposed to training to become an “asset” in the file cabinet of a “human resource” department.https://mic.com/articles/55789/why-i-majored-in-philosophy-despite-everyone-telling-me-not-to#.cXf4GxYLf

Open-Source Curricula

Most important goal: Develop a community of teachers and students to generate course materials and exchange ideas in an “open source” environment.

The use of the Internet as a vehicle for delivering curricular materials allows us to share course materials and our approach with instructors at other institutions. One reason that teaching is not taken as seriously as research is that our teaching reputations are local and the quality is not easily evaluated. The advent of the Web has already started to change this situation. We can use the Web to develop curricular materials in a way that takes advantage of the collective work of many people.
